Wild Horse Photography Workshops, 2021 Onaqui, Utah June 4-7 and September 3-6

workshop fee $900 deposit $300 to hold your spot

Join me for 4 days of photographing the beautiful and diverse Onaqui wild horses of Utah. This herd is only about 1 1/2 hours southwest of Salt Lake City. It’s one of the most dynamic, colorful, and easiest herds of wild horses to photograph. They number around 350 and are divided into various bands that live within a large high desert valley rich in wildlife and scenic diversity. The bands of wild horses include mares, foals, and stallions, which frequently overlap with each other forming larger herds. The group of photographers will be small of about 5-7 people keep the experience relaxed and focused on learning. Some participants would need to bring or rent an all wheel drive or four wheel drive vehicle and we will driving on easy, flat well maintained dirt and gravel roads. We will photograph in early morning and late afternoon to capture the best light and follow the movement of the horses. We will take a break on the range in a lovely desert oasis camp with shade trees at mid day for a lunch (provided). The camp is a great place to relax until the mid afternoon photo shoot. There is fresh water and also pit toilets at the camp. We will safely and unobtrusively photograph many of the wild horses but be ready for lots of action. You would need to provide your own digital camera with a telephoto lens of 300-400mm. I will be providing education on wild horses including history, herd behavior and dynamics, and also non politicized information on challenges facing range managers with fast reproducing large animals whose territory sometimes overlaps with delicate riparian areas, and endangered and threatened species habitat. Workshop participants will also be able to see and enjoy not only the wild horses but the beauty and diversity of the Onaqui HA/HMA which is rich in other wildlife and scenic attractions. Participants will stay in Toole, Utah which is about 45 minutes from the herd area. There is a selection of hotels, restaurants, gas stations, etc. Hotel and food other than lunch is at participants own expense. I will provide lunch each day on the range and will have additional drinking water. We will meet at a predetermined place near the herd area each morning.
